Cranberry juice – Tart and healthy

Lingonberry juice is a Nordic drink that is particularly popular in Sweden.

Many of the cranberry's nutrients are retained in the juice, making it both healthy and nutritious.

In addition, cranberry juice tastes great and its tart flavor makes it more suitable for food than other sweeter juices.

In this article you can read about how to make your own cranberry juice and its effects on health.

Recipe for cranberry juice

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg fresh cranberries
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1 cup of sugar

This recipe yields approximately 5 glasses of cranberry juice.

Cranberry juice is best made from raw cranberries - but frozen can also be used if necessary

Method of preparation

If you're using fresh berries (which is optimal), you should check them for leaves, bad berries, etc. Alternatively, you can use frozen berries, but they don't have as much flavor as fresh ones.

  • Place the berries in a small saucepan with the 5 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and simmer until some of the berries start to burst (about 15 minutes).
  • Remove the pan from the heat and strain the cooked cranberries through a fine mesh strainer or through a large, clean cloth (such as a tea towel). Crush the cranberries with a potato masher or spoon to release as much juice as possible.
  • Reheat the cranberry juice in the pan and add the sugar.
  • Heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved, then remove the pan from the heat (the sugar can also be replaced with stevia, which makes reheating unnecessary – just make sure you stir it thoroughly).
  • Allow the juice to cool down; it is then ready to consume.

NOTE: If the juice is to be used for cranberry jam, you should not sweeten it with sugar.

How to store

You can fill the cranberry juice into peeled bottles and store them in the fridge. It can also be frozen.

The effect of lingonberry juice on health

You can read on the internet that cranberry juice can be used to cure various health problems such as inflammation, urinary tract diseases, cancer, dental problems, etc.

However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims and should not be taken too seriously.

Urinary tract infections

One of the most common claims is that cranberries and cranberry juice can be used to treat urinary tract infections. This claim probably stems from the fact that cranberry juice is used for urinary tract infections.

Although this use is not considered to be proven, some doctors recommend drinking cranberry juice if you have recurring problems with urinary tract infections.

This is because the high level of vitamin C in cranberry juice can be effective against the infections in some cases; in other words, there is some truth to cranberries being used for this purpose – but that doesn't mean the same applies to cranberries or cranberry juice.
